Does Wi-Fi 7 make a difference?

  • Yes if you have fibre above 1 Gbps, a lot of devices at once, or recent phones and laptops that support Wi-Fi 7 and 6 GHz.
  • Less so with a slower connection or older devices: a well-placed Wi-Fi 6 router may be enough.
  • Mesh is the answer to dead spots in large or multi-storey homes, more than raw speed.

What to check before buying

  • The router's ports: a 2.5 Gbps or 10 Gbps port only helps if your modem or fibre box has one too.
  • Compatibility with your internet provider's box, and whether you need to switch it to bridge mode.
  • Firmware updates and security support from the manufacturer.
  • Whether the 6 GHz band is authorised in your country.

Verdict

The TP-Link Archer BE9700 offers the best balance of speed, ports and price in 2026. On a tight budget, the Archer BE3600 is a good start, and for large homes a mesh system such as the MSI Roamii BE Pro will do more than a faster single router.
