Key figures
Two models this year
Samsung launched two book-style foldables in August 2026. The Fold 8 Ultra continues the classic tall format; the Fold 8 adopts a wider, shorter shape and a lower price. Both use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
What reviewers agree on
- Battery: the jump to 5,000 mAh is the most praised change. Droid Life reports 3.5 to 4.5 hours of screen time per day comfortably, and Mark Ellis says it "easily lasts two days".
- Displays: an 8-inch inner screen and a 6.5-inch cover screen, both up to 3,000 nits, with an anti-reflective coating on the Ultra, a first for the line.
- Hinge and crease: the new hinge makes the crease much less visible and the phone easier to open, although Tom's Guide can still feel it when scrolling.
- Performance: no frame-rate issues in games, and the phone stays cool.
- Charging: 45 W wired (about 67 % in 30 minutes) and 20 W wireless.
Where opinions differ
| Topic | Favourable view | Reserved view |
|---|---|---|
| Cameras | The 200 MP main camera produces high-quality photos. | Droid Life notes shutter lag; Tom's Guide finds the 10 MP telephoto and selfie cameras below flagship level. |
| Ultra vs Fold 8 | The Ultra is "the best option on the market" for foldable enthusiasts. | Android Police and Mark Ellis recommend the cheaper Fold 8 for most buyers. |
| Design | Thin enough for one-handed use when closed. | Almost identical to the Fold 7; the camera bump makes it wobble on a table. |
| Features | Up to five apps on the inner screen, One UI 9 well optimised. | Flex Mode is harder to use with the new hinge, and no S Pen support. |
Score: 90 % from Mark Ellis Reviews.
Verdict
The Fold 8 Ultra is an excellent foldable with a much better battery, but it is also the most iterative Fold so far. For most people the standard Fold 8, cheaper and with a more distinctive wide format, is the smarter choice. If dust protection matters, note that both stay at IP48.
