Prices are those listed by TechRepublic; Android Central quotes $429.99 for the Galaxy Watch 9, apparently for the larger model. Both watches work with Android phones only: Android 12 or later for the Pixel, Android 13 or later for the Galaxy, according to Android Central.

Battery life

This is the clearest difference. Android Central's reviewer got about two days from the Pixel Watch 5 with sleep and workout tracking, and Google rates the 45 mm model for up to 40 hours with the always-on screen, according to TechRepublic. The Galaxy Watch 9 has a bigger battery than last year's model, yet Wareable still measured only 24 to 30 hours, depending on GPS use. Android Central's comparison writer says it never lasted a full day for her. If you track sleep every night, the Pixel is much easier to live with.

Tracking accuracy

  • Steps and distance: in Tom's Guide's 4,000-step walk, both watches landed within 20 steps of a manual count; the Pixel was closer on steps, distance and climb.
  • Heart rate: Tom's Guide found the Pixel's walk readings oddly high and the Galaxy's oddly low. Wareable saw the Galaxy Watch 9 match a chest strap on steady runs, but it missed almost all of an interval session.
  • GPS: Wareable measured the Galaxy Watch 9 within about 20 metres of its reference device.

Tom's Guide named the Pixel Watch 5 the winner of its test, and Android Central's review also prefers it to the Galaxy Watch 9 for step accuracy and battery life.

Health features and subscriptions

  • Galaxy Watch 9: Vitals, Energy score, Heart Health Score, Fitness Index and Daily Cardio Load, with no paywall. But TechRepublic notes that Samsung Health Monitor features, such as the ECG and sleep apnea detection, need a compatible Galaxy phone.
  • Pixel Watch 5: works fully with most Android phones. Breathing emergency detection is limited to some European countries, and AI coaching needs Google Health Premium at $9.99 a month (TechRepublic). Android Central also points out that some promised features were missing at launch.
  • Both: ECG, blood oxygen, skin temperature and sleep tracking, plus Gemini voice commands.

These are wellness tools, not medical devices. Even regulator-cleared functions such as Samsung's sleep apnea feature only flag possible issues; they do not replace a diagnosis from a doctor.

Is the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 worth the extra money?

At $699.99, the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 costs $320 more than the base Galaxy Watch 9. For that, you get an 800 mAh battery that lasted about 72 hours in Tom's Guide's test, a 5,000-nit screen, dive certification and a tougher case. Wareable also points to it as the Samsung option with much better battery life. The catch is size: a single 47 mm, 61.5 g case that Tom's Guide calls large and chunky. It is worth it for Samsung owners who hike, dive or hate charging every night; for everyday use, the standard models make more sense. See our Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 analysis.

Verdict

For most Android users, the Pixel Watch 5 is the safer choice: reviewers get roughly twice the battery life of the Galaxy Watch 9 and more consistent tracking, and it works fully with any recent Android phone. The Galaxy Watch 9 makes more sense if you own a Samsung phone, since you unlock all of Samsung's health features without a subscription, and it is slightly cheaper and faster. Owners of a Pixel Watch 4 or a Galaxy Watch 8 have little reason to upgrade. For more detail, read our Pixel Watch 5 analysis and our Galaxy Watch 9 analysis.
