Key figures
Why the box price is not the real price
In 2026, every console became more expensive, and the price on the shelf hides other costs: an online subscription to play with friends, the games themselves, and often a second controller. To compare fairly, we added everything up over three years, the time most families keep a console before thinking about the next one.
Our assumptions
To compare like with like, we used the same rules for every console:
- The console: US list price in October 2026.
- Online play: the cheapest plan that allows online multiplayer, paid for three years.
- Games: three new games a year, so nine in total, at $70 each. That is a typical price for a new release; some cost $80, such as GTA 6 Standard Edition ($79.99).
- Not included: a second controller, extra storage, sales, second-hand games and free-to-play games. We list them separately below.
These are our own calculations from the prices published in our sources. Your real total will depend on your habits.
The prices we used
| Console (US) | Cheapest online plan | Online over 3 years | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | $499.99 | Switch Online, $19.99 a year | $59.97 |
| PS5 Digital | $599.99 | PS Plus Essential, $79.99 a year | $239.97 |
| PS5 | $649.99 | PS Plus Essential, $79.99 a year | $239.97 |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | PS Plus Essential, $79.99 a year | $239.97 |
| Xbox Series S | $499.99 | Game Pass Essential, $9.99 a month | $359.64 |
| Xbox Series X | $799.99 | Game Pass Essential, $9.99 a month | $359.64 |
| Steam Machine (512 GB) | $1,049 | None needed | $0 |
Console prices from VGC, TweakTown, Pure Xbox and GeekWire; subscription prices from GameLuster, NME and Forbes.
The three-year total
| Console | Console | Online | 9 games | Total over 3 years | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | $499.99 | $59.97 | $630 | $1,189.96 | about $33 |
| PS5 Digital | $599.99 | $239.97 | $630 | $1,469.96 | about $41 |
| Xbox Series S | $499.99 | $359.64 | $630 | $1,489.63 | about $41 |
| PS5 | $649.99 | $239.97 | $630 | $1,519.96 | about $42 |
| Steam Machine | $1,049 | $0 | $630 | $1,679.00 | about $47 |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | $239.97 | $630 | $1,769.96 | about $49 |
| Xbox Series X | $799.99 | $359.64 | $630 | $1,789.63 | about $50 |
Three lessons stand out:
- The Switch 2 is the cheapest to own, thanks to Nintendo's low online subscription. Over three years, Nintendo Switch Online costs four times less than PS Plus Essential.
- Online play matters more on Xbox: at $9.99 a month, Game Pass Essential costs $360 over three years, more than PS Plus Essential on an annual plan.
- The Steam Machine catches up over time: it is the most expensive box, but online play is free and PC games are often discounted on Steam, so the gap can shrink a lot for patient buyers.
And with a subscription instead of buying games?
Some players buy very few games and use a subscription catalogue instead. Here is the same three-year calculation without buying games:
| Option | Console | Subscription over 3 years | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S + Game Pass Ultimate ($22.99 a month) | $499.99 | $827.64 | $1,327.63 |
| Xbox Series X + Game Pass Ultimate | $799.99 | $827.64 | $1,627.63 |
| PS5 + PS Plus Extra ($16.99 a month) | $649.99 | $611.64 | $1,261.63 |
| PS5 + PS Plus Premium ($19.99 a month) | $649.99 | $719.64 | $1,369.63 |
Game Pass Ultimate includes Microsoft's new games on release day, except new Call of Duty games, which now arrive about a year later, according to Forbes. PS Plus Extra and Premium usually add Sony's big games months or years after release, so you would still need to buy blockbusters such as GTA 6. Paying for a plan by the year is generally cheaper than month by month when it is offered; compare the options in our Game Pass vs PlayStation Plus guide.
The extras people forget
- A second controller: a Switch 2 Pro Controller costs $90 and a pair of Joy-Con 2 $100 since Nintendo's 2025 price rise, according to GameSpot; a standard DualSense for PS5 costs at least $74.99.
- Storage: big games fill the internal storage quickly; read our gaming storage guide.
- A family plan: Nintendo Switch Online Family costs $34.99 a year for up to eight accounts, a good deal for families with several Switch consoles.
- Physical or digital: a disc drive lets you buy cheaper second-hand games and resell yours; the PS5 Digital saves $50 at purchase but closes that door.
How to pay less
- Buy fewer, better games: waiting a few months for a price drop often saves $20 to $30 per game.
- Pay subscriptions yearly when that option exists, and pause them between big releases.
- Watch Black Friday: bundles with a game are more likely than big console discounts in 2026; see our Black Friday 2026 guide.
- Choose the right console first: read Switch 2, PS5 or Steam Machine: which console to buy for the holidays.
Frequently asked questions
Is the cheapest console always the cheapest to own? Not always. The Xbox Series S costs the same as the Switch 2 at purchase, but its online subscription makes it about $300 more expensive over three years in our calculation.
Is the Steam Machine really free to play online? Yes, online play is free on Steam. You still pay for games, but Steam sales are frequent.
Do I need an online subscription at all? Only for most online multiplayer games and cloud saves. Free-to-play games such as Fortnite are the main exception on PS5 and Xbox.
Are these prices the same in Europe? No. Console and subscription prices differ by country; for example, the Switch 2 costs €499.99 in Europe. The method stays the same: add the console, three years of online play and your games.
Verdict
Over three years, the Nintendo Switch 2 is the cheapest console to own, at about $1,190 with nine games, thanks to its low online subscription. The PS5 costs about $1,520 and remains the best value for players who want GTA 6 and the biggest games. The Xbox Series X is the most expensive in our calculation unless you rely on Game Pass Ultimate instead of buying games. And the Steam Machine, despite its high price, becomes more reasonable over time thanks to free online play and Steam sales. Before you buy, estimate how many games you really play each year: that number changes the result more than the price of the box.
