Amazon's 2026 Kindle lineup

Amazon unveiled its new e-readers on October 1, 2026: a redesigned basic Kindle, a new Kindle Paperwhite and a new Kindle Colorsoft with a colour screen. The Kindle shipped immediately; the Paperwhite and Colorsoft open for pre-order and arrive in the US on October 28, according to TechRepublic.

Prices have gone up. In August, Amazon raised the basic Kindle from $109.99 to $149.99 and the Paperwhite from $159.99 to $199.99. The gap between the two is now $50, which makes the choice more interesting.

What is new on the 2026 Kindle

The basic Kindle keeps its 6-inch, 300 ppi screen but gets a real refresh, according to TechRadar:

  • Lighter and thinner: 140 g and 6.85 mm, against 158 g and 8 mm for the 2024 model.
  • Faster: Amazon says books open about 30 % faster.
  • Better button: the power button moved from the bottom to the upper right, so you press it by accident less often.
  • New options: new colours and a premium aluminium version with 32 GB.

It remains the only 6-inch Kindle, the easiest to slip into a pocket or a small bag.

Why the Paperwhite is worth $50 more

  • Bigger 7-inch screen: more text per page, fewer page turns.
  • Warm light: you can shift the screen to an amber tone in the evening, which many readers find more comfortable before sleep.
  • Waterproof: you can read in the bath or at the pool without worry.
  • Twice the battery life: up to 12 weeks, against 6 weeks.
  • Signature Edition ($249.99): 32 GB, an aluminium body, automatic warm light, double-tap page turns and support for a charging dock.

TechRadar advises against the basic Kindle for anyone who wants warm light or to read in the bath, and recommends it for those who want the cheapest, most compact Kindle.

What about colour?

If you read comics, graphic novels or cookbooks, consider the Kindle Colorsoft ($289.99), whose screen shows colour at 150 ppi and black-and-white text at 300 ppi. For notes and drawing on the page, see our Kindle Scribe Colorsoft review analysis.

Ads: pay attention to the version

The cheapest versions show ads on the lock screen. On the 2026 Kindle, removing them costs $20 more ($169.99). If you buy one as a gift, check the version before ordering.

Which one should you buy?

  • You want the cheapest Kindle or the smallest: the Kindle (2026).
  • You read in the evening in bed: the Paperwhite, for its warm light.
  • You read in the bath, at the pool or on the beach: the Paperwhite, which is waterproof.
  • You travel a lot and hate charging: the Paperwhite, with up to 12 weeks of battery.
  • You buy for a child: the Kindle Kids edition ($179.99).
  • You want the most premium black-and-white Kindle: the Paperwhite Signature Edition.

Frequently asked questions

Is the old Kindle cheaper now? Not really: TechRadar notes that the 2024 models were not discounted and cost the same as the 2026 versions.

Verdict

The Kindle (2026) is the best small e-reader: lighter, faster and still very sharp, ideal for daytime reading and tight budgets. But at only $50 more, the Kindle Paperwhite (2026) is the better buy for most readers, with its larger screen, warm light, waterproofing and double the battery life. If you read every evening or near water, choose the Paperwhite without hesitation. For more gift ideas, read our Black Friday 2026 guide.
