What is confirmed
Grand Theft Auto VI, often called GTA 6, is the most anticipated game of the year. Rockstar Games releases it on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version has been announced for launch, and no Nintendo Switch 2 version has been announced either.
Here is what is known about performance, from the most reliable to the least:
- PS5 Pro: the PlayStation Store lists the game as "PS5 Pro Enhanced". Sony and Rockstar have not said what this means: higher resolution, better effects or a higher frame rate are all possible, but none is confirmed.
- 30 frames per second: after visiting Rockstar North, YouTuber Davy Jones reported that the studio's co-head, Rob Nelson, said the consoles run the game at 30 fps "for now", and that a 60 fps option at launch still had to be discussed with the technical teams. This comes second-hand, not from an official Rockstar statement.
- Base PS5: Rockstar's long "Extended Look" presentation was captured entirely on a standard PS5, not a PS5 Pro.
- Marketing: the official site and Sony's blog say the game "plays best on PS5". This comes from a marketing partnership between Sony and Rockstar; it is not a performance comparison.
- Xbox Series X and Series S: Rockstar has not shown either Xbox version yet.

How the consoles compare
- PS5 Pro: the most powerful console, and the only version with a confirmed enhancement badge. It is the most likely to offer the best image. But TechRadar and The Outerhaven both warn against buying one expecting 60 fps: nothing confirms it, and more graphics power alone does not double the frame rate if the processor is the limit.
- PS5: the version Rockstar used to show the game. It benefits from the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and Sony's marketing support. It is the safe, cheaper choice.
- Xbox Series X: on paper its graphics chip is slightly stronger than the standard PS5's (12 teraflops against about 10.3), but no footage exists yet. It is now more expensive than a PS5.
- Xbox Series S: the cheapest way to play, but it will almost certainly run at a lower resolution. The Outerhaven advises not buying one specifically for GTA VI until its performance is shown.
Which one should you choose?
- You already own a PS5 or an Xbox Series X: keep it. Both run the game at launch, and there is no reason today to switch.
- You want the best possible version and your budget allows it: the PS5 Pro, knowing that its exact improvements have not been announced.
- You are buying a first console on a reasonable budget: a standard PS5, the version Rockstar has shown.
- Your friends play on Xbox, or you use Game Pass: the Xbox Series X.
- Your budget is very tight: wait for the first tests of the Series S version before buying it for this game.
- You play only on PC: wait. Rockstar has announced no PC version for now.
Verdict
For most people, the best console for GTA VI is the one they already own. If you are buying, the PS5 Pro is the most promising version but also the most expensive, and its advantages are not yet known; a standard PS5 is the most sensible choice. The first independent performance tests will appear when the game is released on November 19: if you can wait a few days, they will settle the question.
