Is 85 inches right for your room?

An 85-inch TV is spectacular for films and sport, but it must fit your room and your habits. Tom's Guide recommends sitting about 2.6 metres (8.5 feet) away. Sitting closer can make the image look less sharp, because it is the same 4K resolution stretched over a much larger screen.

Before buying, check:

  • The wall or stand: an 85-inch TV is almost 1.9 metres wide. Measure your furniture, and check that the feet fit or that your wall can hold a mount.
  • The way in: the box is huge. Measure doors, stairs and lifts.
  • Light in the room: a bright room with large windows needs a very bright TV.
  • Your main use: films in the evening, daytime sport or gaming do not call for the same TV.

OLED, Mini-LED or QLED?

  • OLED: each pixel lights itself, so blacks are perfect, contrast is excellent and colours stay accurate from the side. It is less bright and much more expensive at this size. LG's 2026 OLED in this size class is actually 83 inches.
  • Mini-LED: thousands of small LEDs behind the screen give very high brightness and strong HDR, ideal for bright living rooms and daytime sport. Some blooming (halos around bright objects) and weaker viewing angles are common.
  • QLED / LED with local dimming: the most affordable option at 85 inches. It is fine for most uses, but less bright and less contrasted than Mini-LED.

Tom's Guide sums it up: OLED gives better contrast, black levels, uniformity and viewing angles; QLED is brighter and often cheaper.

Our advice by budget

  • Under $1,000: the Hisense QD7 is the cheapest pick Tom's Guide recommends. It is accurate and supports Dolby Vision, but it struggles in bright rooms and is limited to 60 Hz.
  • Around $1,500: the TCL QM7K brings Mini-LED brightness, good colours and 144 Hz for gaming. Watch out for off-angle viewing and only two HDMI 2.1 ports. See our TCL QM7L review analysis for the newer model.
  • For gamers: the Hisense U75QG offers 165 Hz, four HDMI 2.1 ports and excellent HDR, perfect for a PS5 Pro or a gaming PC.
  • For bright living rooms: the Hisense U8QG is the brightest, with a 72 W built-in sound system, but it shows blooming and reflections.
  • For film lovers: the LG B6 OLED gives the best picture in a darker room, but it costs much more and its speakers are weak.

Don't forget

  • Sound: even large TVs have weak speakers. Tom's Guide recommends a soundbar.
  • Gaming: for a PS5, Xbox Series X or PC, choose HDMI 2.1 ports with 120 Hz or more. GTA 6 arrives on November 19.
  • Streaming: check the built-in system (Google TV, webOS, Fire TV); a separate streamer can fix a slow interface. See Roku Streaming Stick Plus vs Google TV Streamer.
  • Price history: TV prices fall sharply during sales; compare with our Black Friday 2026 guide.

Frequently asked questions

How far should I sit from an 85-inch TV? About 2.6 metres (8.5 feet), according to Tom's Guide.

Is an 85-inch OLED worth it? For a dark room and films, yes; for a bright room, a Mini-LED TV is usually brighter and cheaper.

Do I need 8K? No. 4K content is the norm, and the picks above are all 4K.

How heavy is an 85-inch TV? Often 40 kg or more with the stand; plan for two people to install it and a wall mount rated for the weight.

Verdict

At 85 inches, the best choice depends on your room. In a bright living room, a Mini-LED such as the Hisense U8QG or TCL QM7K gives the brightness you need. For gaming, the Hisense U75QG stands out. On a tight budget, the Hisense QD7 is hard to beat. And for films in a dark room, the LG B6 OLED offers the best picture, at a much higher price.
